Lina Mae
Horne
Mar 3, 1927 — Sep 1, 2026
Bridgeville, DE
Lina M. Horne, 99, of Bridgeville, Delaware, departed this life on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. Born on March 3, 1927, in Wadesboro, North Carolina, Lina was the cherished daughter of the late Katie Mae and James S. Johnson.
Lina's educational journey began at Tilghman Station Elementary School and Deep Creek High School in North Carolina. Upon moving to Delaware, she continued her education at Frederick Douglass School in Seaford, Delaware. Her love of learning remained with her throughout her life. She continually sought wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, always striving to grow and encourage others.
Lina worked as a private housekeeper for families in the Bridgeville community. She also worked as a general laborer at Dulaney Frozen Foods and Swift & Company before gaining employment at Stockley Center. Lina later retired as a housekeeper at the Manor House, where she faithfully served for 19 years.
Faith was the foundation of Lina's life. Through her years of service and worship, she touched countless lives with her prayers, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to God. She began her journey of faith with the Lord as a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She later became a member of Refuge Temple Revival Center and Tabernacle of Prayer Church, serving as Church Mother at both churches. At the time of her passing, she was a faithful member of Williams Chapel Church, where she also served as Church Mother.
Lina found joy in the simple blessings of life. She loved attending church services and Bible study, tending to her garden, preparing delicious meals, and serving those around her. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome, where family and friends could always find a listening ear, a loving heart, a good meal, and the comfort of feeling at home.
Lina was preceded in death by her parents, Katie Mae and James S. Johnson; her beloved children: George Horne Jr., Albert Horne, Kathleen Horne, and Joyce Horne. Though she endured the profound pain of losing those she loved Lina's faith never wavered. She trusted in God's grace, drew strength from her faith, and continued to meet life with resilience, love, and a gentle spirit.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Dr. Lillian R. Horne of Durham, North Carolina; her grandchildren: Barry Lott of Newark, Delaware, Tyrone Gibbs, Kalissa Horne and Katara Horne of Bridgeville, Delaware, Katina Henry (Shannon) of Richmond, VA, Anthony Horne of Harbeson, Delaware, Andre Horne of Bear, Delaware, and Deshawn Young of Milford, Delaware.
She was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of extended relatives, church family, and dear friends who loved her deeply and will forever cherish her memory. Lina also enjoyed special friendships with Sarah Smith, Nadine Dutton, Amelia Anderson, Phyllis Leggs, and Frankie Griffin. The family extends special thanks to Anna Thomas, Addus Home Healthcare, DSAAPD, and Williams Chapel Church for their love, care, prayers, and support.
Lina Mae Horne will forever be remembered for her strength, kindness, generosity, wisdom, and unwavering faith. She was a woman who loved deeply, served faithfully, and gave of herself freely. The lessons she taught, the prayers she prayed, the meals she prepared, and the love she shared will continue through every generation that follows her.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit and legacy remain alive in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
“Her faith carried her, her love defined her, and her memory will sustain us.”
With much love,
The Family
