Obituary

Remembering Ronnie M. Russum

Scripture declares that the number of our days on earth is already known by God and that none of us will live one minute beyond the time that God has already given each one of us.

His earthly journey began on June 25, 1953, Cambridge, MD to the late Mary Nixon-Russum, the fifth of six children. Armond W. Russum (Myrna) Easton, MD, the late Lavern L, Camper-Bernard (Delaware), the late Larry Russum (Cambridge, MD), Thomas W. Russum, & Dr. Miriam M. Summers (Ernie) Baltimore, MD. Born into a "family village," Ronnie received lots of love and attention, spending many summers with his late Uncle Percy and Aunt Margaret Walley.

Ronnie's early education started in Cambridge, MD and after his family moved to Easton, MD attended Easton High School, graduating in 1973. He excelled in athletics including basketball, track and field, tennis, golf, among others. He attended Chesapeake Community College where he excelled in track and field, and basketball. Ronnie was gifted with natural abilities tending to nature's beauty; and after receiving a gift from his mother to build wood designs, he became an engineer of building master pieces of wood art. This did not sustain his ingrained work ethics.

He soon started working at Hog Neck Golf Course (enhancing his golf skills) and worked part-time with Downs Taxi Service. Ronnie never met strangers; he met people he did not know. He picked up a couple from Easton Airport (flew in from Martins Airport) and drove to Robert Morris Inn, Oxford, MD for dinner. He was told to stay and wait for them. During the drive back to Easton Airport he was given a business card and an opportunity to change careers when ready. He at once may contact and travel to Dundalk to test drive their trucks. He was hired the same day. Ronnie returned to Easton, obtained his belongings, and as it is often said, "The rest is history." He considered this one of the best days of his life. He obtained his class A license during time with Montgomery Maintenance, Dundalk, MD (truck driver) 1979-1985. As expanded opportunities became available, he started at Durrett Shephard Trucking Co. in May 1985. There he obtained his CDL license. He received numerous accolades and awards for his commitment to detail and customer service. He was a Star driver. His physical frailty forced retirement in 2009. Ronnie recognized this was a gateway for other opportunities.

Faith in God was instilled in Ronnie and siblings from an early age. The family were members of Zion Baptist Church, Cambridge, MD until moving to Easton, MD in 1961 were family joined Union Baptist Church. He stayed in fellowship with UBC and the community for years. Ronnie's marriage ended in divorce, and after retirement (2009) Ronnie returned to the Eastern Shore, and sharpened skills to become an expert wood deign builder. He fused wood design art with nature creating beautiful landscapes. He shared many of his finished pieces of art with family, and friends. This was his way of giving back to others. He spent hours outside enjoying nature, teaching others how to garden and create crafts. He also enjoyed reading, and studying biblical scriptures, canning fruit, and pickles, and preparing for his trip to the mother land/Africa.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his mother of Easton, MD, his father Thomas Trego of Cambridge, MD, nephew, Gregory 'OJ' Johnson, Jr. of Baltimore, MD & Gloria 'Angie' Camper-McCray of Bridgeville, DE. A long-time companion, Ms. Polly Blake of Easton, MD.

Along with his siblings, Ronnie is survived by sons, Devronn L. Roberts, (Newark, New York), and Randall Russum (Maryland), one first cousin, Walter Walley, Sr. (Trappe, MD). Extended family, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, classmates, co-workers, and friends.

That man is a success—who has live well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of gifted men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world a better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others gave the best he had. –Unknown.
